Northern Lights

Car broke down but more Northern Lights!

Ok, so yesterday I was suppose to drive to a meeting in town…

But the car broke down!! Grrrrrr. Well actually, I think that it froze down. The ABS steering system on one back tire froze stuck…. I now know one can not drive with only three tires moving.

On top of that the car got stuck…. With the back tires not really going anywhere and the front tires on pure ice, they just started spinning until we had a nice little crater underneath each front tire. Time to call the neighbors. He pulled the car out of the neat little craters which also made the back tires lose. The car is now standing in a warm garage to see if the problem is fixed.

Anyways, while the car was being driven to the garage the Northern Lights came peeking through the clouds. I only took 5 photos (I have no idea how I restrained myself like that… ) and here are some. 🍃🍃

The Northern Lights.

We finally had clear skies yesterday…

… and Northern Lights! So off I went into the darkness with my camera.

I first went to a lake where streetlights are still visible. I experimented a bit with the street lights. Then I moved on to a river nearby called Åbyälven. After that I walked to/on the lake that runs into Åbyälven.

Standing on this lake, the ice all of the sudden starts singing. That’s what people call it you know; the ice sings. I can tell you though… when it is close to midnight and it is pitch black and you are all alone in the woods on a frozen lake, it DOES NOT sound like the ice is singing. It sounds like it is screaming…. or an evil laugh…. It scared the sh*t out of me. In my over-dramatic head I saw myself falling through this ice, being dragged under and then being taken away by the strong current that runs into Åbyälven. This is a long river…. in my head I was almost on the other side of Sweden!!

Realistically? Cars can drive on this ice. It was singing, not cracking and certainly not laughing. The sound it makes is the ice expanding and setting as temperatures go up and down. 🍃🍃

Almost New Year!

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a WONDERFUL Chrismas 😀

We have been keeping busy greeting people from all over Europe who visit us for snowmobile safaris. It is so rewarding to see happy faces!

I got a new snowmobile for my birthday 😀 (which was the 20th of December) but I have hardly had any time to take it out for a spin! There have been a few trips here and there. Maybe I will join our Northern Lights snowmobile safari tomorrow evening :).

Anyway, I have SOOOO many new pictures I want to show you! I will start with some night photography at Åbyälven. The Northern Lights came out to say hi and it was a stunning evening. 🍃🍃

Northern Lights & snow & the moon.

Quick post today. Was about to walk home with my dogs…

Then I changed my mind and ran back inside (the Lodge) and got my camera (and left some stunned & annoyed looking doggies 😀 ).

The northern Lights are out and the moon is stunning this evening. We haven’t had a clear night like this in ages! It’s been snowing lots and lots, which is good but it was so nice to see the stars again. I can get lost in these stars.

Anyways, when we say that the snow illuminates everything… it’s hard to describe what that looks like. On our darkest days we have about 2,5-3 hours of daylight. You might say that that sounds very dark but… the snow illuminates everything! Especially when the moon is out like tonight. Can you see the clear shadows of the trees on the frozen lake? That is moonlight. Moonlight illuminating the snow.

Get it now? 🍃🍃

Oh ya, you can see my cabin on the first picture… I forgot to turn the lights off.

The Northern Lights activity from last night.

So I heard there was going to be a lot of Northern Lights activity yesterday evening… Like A LOT. I contemplated for quite some time if it was worth walking home, getting all of my camera equipment ready and to head out. Especially after the last fiasco…

I decided it was worth it and this is the result!

Did you know we arrange Northern Lights Snowmobile safaris?
We have perfect conditions to see the Northern Lights up here. Come join us for a snowmobile Safari out into the wilderness, into the darkness to search for the Northern Lights. It is an amazing feeling to drive out into the woods, turn off the snowmobiles….. First complete darkness, then, if lucky, the sky turns flashes of green which dances above you. And the silence. Complete silence.

PS: Look at that moon!!

Photoshoot of the Aurora Borealis…. not.

It was the kind of evening with the PERFECT Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis.

So what does one do? One of course grabs her camera and heads out. Hours later, 170+ pictures later and after just witnessing one of the biggest Northern Lights I have seen, I head inside and eagerly load my pictures onto my computer…. it is almost midnight now but I just had to see…..

And that is when I realise I ruined the evening by being a bad photographer. These were unfortunately the best ones of the 170+ I took…..

Oh well, better luck next time.

We are back :)

Hey everyone!! Long time no see 🙂 . It has been very busy over here in Swedish Lapland but we will try to keep our blog updated from now on.

The summer season has almost ended and the cold has set in. We have had our first frosty nights!

It has been a very good summer with lots of guiding, fishing, surviving, camping, some more guiding and some more guiding! We had people from all over the world visiting and we have had many many happy customers! It is great to see the enthusiasm on peoples faces when they arrive for a week out in the bush. And the looks on their faces when they catch that all important fish! Good times…

Yesterday I went out with camera and warm clothes to capture the Northern Lights. And it did not disappoint! Beautiful streams of green, yellow even some blues and reds moving along the skyline. It really is a magnificent sight. It leaves me in aw every time.

Where are you going to spend Christmas and New Year?

You probably have made plans for this upcoming holiday already and so have I. I will spend these days + 28 other nights in a tent in Lapland with subzero degrees and ice in my beard 🙂

Since it is still 38 days to go before the winter challenge will start we decided to make a new page with some brief general information about it. Just click the page link above called “30 nights in a tent in Lapland’s biting cold winter” to get there. I am actually really looking forward to this adventure now.

Northern Lights in Lapland

The other night is was Northern Lights over our Wilderness Lodge in Swedish Lapland. Rebecca could of course not stay inside and off she went with the camera. On one picture you can see our lakeside sauna under the Northern Lights. A few hours earlier I actually had the wood heated sauna turned on and was actually laying in the warm sauna watching the show. It was in the early stage of the Northern Lights though but that still made the sauna time feel even more pleasant then normal.

Northern Lights over Swedish Lapland

Yesterday night there were some Northern Lights over Auktjsaur. Rebecca took the camera and went out to capture the magic show. These pictures is taken just outside the Lodge. The Northern Lights sure can be a spectacular show. I am looking forward to this winter when I can walk out on the ice and stand on the middle of Djuptjärn in the cold, crisp and quiet night and just enjoy life. I will probably bring my coffee thermos and a reindeer skin and lay down and just watch. If it is too cold it is also possible to watch it from the big windows in the sauna at the lakeside. Beats most of today’s TV shows for sure.
