Black And White

Jokkmokk market!!

Yesterday we went to the 412th Jokkmokk market!

It is one of Swedens’ oldest markets and is very much talked about every year. They also have a summer market but the winter one is the big attraction. Oddly enough, yesterday was my first chance ever to go!

There were some plusses and there were some minusses.

Let’s start with the positive. It is traditional, a lot of handicrafts, people walking around in traditional clothing and traditional foods. Also traditional music! I am a big fan of the music of the Sami culture. (The Sami people are of course the native people of Lapland.)

Now the minusses….. soooooooo many people. I am not a big fan of crowds… kind of why I moved to a village with 50 inhabitants…. The amount of people made it difficult to walk, talk, see and move. That is how bad it was. This also made the food lines incredibly long. Also, even though I wrote with the positive that it is traditional, it was not as traditional as I expected. I expected more possibilities to learn about the Sami culture, and even more people in traditional clothing, maybe some activities.

I am happy we went yesterday as I have long been curious about this oh so famous market. Will I go back? Not unless I can go on a Thursday or a Friday. It was just too crowded for me.

Because of the huge crowds and because I am a short person, my picture possibilities were limited…… And as I did not like the crowd I tried to hide them a bit in the pictures, this also enabled me to really highlight the clothing. You see the look and the woman’s face? The second reindeer in line decided to rebel and started a stampede 😀 Can you imagine?? A [small] reindeer stampede!! No one was standing in front of them though. Apparently someone touched the reindeers horns. They don’t like that. Especially now as they are shedding their skin on the horns. It means they will soon lose these horns and grow new ones. It can look very bloody sometimes! 🍃🍃

Snow!!

It finally started snowing again!

Everything feels so good right now. We just finished a huge teambuilding event and everyone was so happy! They loved the food I made – which was smoked & salted reindeer stew with chanterelles, carrots and red onions served with lingon berries, potatoes and flatbread. It was a great energy booster for the rest of the season 🙂

Now of course we are in clean-up faze which is less fun….

But like the title said: IT’S SNOWING!!! And boy do we need it. We have less then half the amount of snow we normally have this time of year. I think we might have 30 cm left after the last warm days and we normally have at least a meter to a meter-and-a-half. If we have any more warm days before we get some real new snow, we might be cancelling snowmobiling. And what is a winter without snowmobiling????

On the program for this weekend is more clean-up and maybe the Jokkmokk Market!! I have always wanted to go but we have been busy every year. It is actually only an hours drive so I am hopeful we will make it this year 🙂 Will be taking lots of pictures of course. I will try some tricks I learnt from Streets of Nuremberg blog and get some people shots.

Fun facts:

  • The Jokkmokk market is over 400 years old! This is the 412th to be exact.
  • I have now fallen down 18 times this winter – this is a very slippery winter!!! (but Thomas says its just me… ) The last one really hurt! I fell on the stairs….

Black&White versus Color.

This picture was taken at a nature reserve where we have a cottage and where we take our guests – for fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, anything.

I love this place. The picture I took here, I overexposed it when I was taking it. And then enhanced the photo in an editing program which gives it this dreamy quality. I really like it. I also really like it in black & white. Which one is your favorite?

Beauty in Black&White part 3

Simple post this time.

Simple but elegant… or maybe simple but mysterious? You pick :).

I was playing around with the camera and came up with this. 🍃🍃

Beauty in Black&White part 2

This world is so focused on color nowadays.

I’ll try to explain what it is that I like about black & white photographs.

A black & white photograph makes the subject seem

  • effortless
  • timeless
  • beyond our perception of the world
  • classic
  • old
  • modern
  • artistic
  • sad
  • pure

Not all pictures are black & white material… they are mere ‘pictures’. I am writing about the greatness of a photograph and what it can do. Do not misunderstand, there are some tremendously beautiful photographs out there in full color that have touched people. But for me converting these into black & white makes them effortless and timeless and beyond our perception of the world and classic and old and modern and artistic and sad and pure – all at the same time = the power of a photograph.

I hope that some day my photographs will have that power.

So I decided to remove the color from my photographs that I have taken this year… we do not need color. The beauty is there but if you refuse to see it, you never ever will.

People are so focused on color so I removed it. So people are forced to focus on the lack of color. If only people could do that when they walk around in this world… when they look at other people. Deep within people have no color, they are the same. They have hearts, they have veins, they have thoughts, they have lungs to breathe, …they have souls…

Like nature. I see beauty everywhere up here in Swedish Lapland. 🍃🍃
