Stowaway squirrel.

Can’t really blame him/her for hiding out in our shed…. but it really shouldn’t be in here.

The door blew open on Saturday so I am thinking he/she snuck in then… which means it has been in there for 4 days already and there isn’t much food in our shed.

I left the door open now, and I left food. Probaby not a good combo but I am worried it hasn’t eaten. It should eat something before he/she goes out into the winter again. If it decides to make our shed its home, I will have to show him/her the door!

FYI, I first thought it was a giant rat 🙂 Just saw the head and body underneath some wood. It would have been okay if it had been a rat, they can get in and out. The squirrel can not.

But ain’t she (I decided on she and named her Mary) cute? 🍃🍃

Flock of reindeer.

Quick post today.

The pictures are not as clear as I would have liked (it was snowing and they were far away), but honestly who cares, it’s a flock of reindeer!! 😀

I love these animals. 🍃🍃

Sun rising over Åbyälven.

This is a river that runs close to our home.

It flows fast enough so it does not freeze over completely during the winter. There was an otter family living here until this summer but they moved. I miss them, they were cute.

So, the sun came out!

It came, it went. The sun came out on Thursday the 24th of November and we have not seen it since.

And the snow keeps falling… and falling…… falling some more.

We dug out some snowmobiles today, almost couldn’t find them! First customers are coming in a few weeks, everything is ready :).

I have made a video-slideshow-timelapse-thingie of Thursdays photoshoot, over 200 pictures in less than 2 minutes. It is up on our YouTube channel and can be seen here. But here are a few of my favorite.

The sun came out!

Yeah!!

Haven’t seen the sun in AGES but there it was! Cold too 🙂 Around the minus 10° C. Of course I went out taking pictures… but I went a bit overboard… I now have 392 pictures to go through, sort out, edit.

So for now I will just share a preview! Pictures will probably come tomorrow.

Fun fact:

I have written before about my clumsiness in the ‘Pro & Con’ post and how I fall down a lot during winter time because of this. I figured I should keep track… I am up on 6 now. But 1 time was inside so I am not sure that that counts….

Midnight photography.

The road that I live on.

Went out with the camera last night. There is something about walking around in the woods during the night. It is dark but at the same time it’s not. The snow illuminates everything. After a while the moon came out as well.

It is so quiet. Complete silence. You can hear the animals at times. Maybe the snow falling.

There live four people on our road 🙂

Pros & cons: winter in Swedish Lapland.

Like everything in life, so does winter in Lapland have its pros and cons. Here are a few in my humble opinion.

Pros:

  • It’s beautiful!
  • You can go snowmobiling.
  • You can go dogsledding!!
  • My dog, Raya, loves the snow.
  • It becomes really quiet.
  • It’s beautiful!! (I know, I said that already but it really is)
  • Everything becomes pure & white.
  • You can go places… secret places.
  • Northern Lights are easier to see.
  • Sauna time!!
  • There is something called ‘spring-winter’.
  • You can see millions and millions of stars.
  • You can gain some weight and call it ‘winter-isolation’ :).
  • Lots of baggy clothes! (baggy=comfy)
  • Hats are a must and I love hats.
  • You have better reasons for starting a fire in the fireplace inside.
  • Witnessing everything come back to life in the spring!
  • Oh, and you can go snowmobiling :).

Cons:

  • It is cold. As in holy f#*k it is cold….
  • It takes 15 minutes to get dressed to take the dogs out.
  • It takes half an hour to get the car ready.
  • You can actually get trapped because of the amount of snow.
  • You need to be prepared for emergencies, like ALL the time.
  • The beginning of winter is kinda dark… We are talking about max 3 hours of daylight.
  • Did I mention it gets cold?? Like minus 40°C cold?
  • You need to dig stuff out of the snow on a daily basis.
  • It takes 15 minutes to get undressed after you have taken the dogs out.
  • Shoveling snow!!
  • If you lose something in the snow it is gone….. FOREVER!!
  • I am a clumsy person which means I fall down A LOT during winter.
  • When winter comes to an end you have slush… lots and lots of cold, wet slush.

Fun facts:

– It is possible for your nose to freeze shut if you squeeze it in minus 40°C. Hehe.

– Minus 40° Celsius and minus 40° Fahrenheit are the same! It is where the temperatures on the Celsius scale and the Fahrenheit scale meet.

Snowmobile season is on its way!

Very soon our snowmobile season will start!

I think that is something (almost) everyone up here thinks of when they think of winter.

In October we usually take all of our snowmobiles out of storage and move them closer to the Lodge. Then we have our lead guide and mechanic go through all of them to make sure everything is in working order and up-to-date! Make sure all the lights and breaks are working the way they should = safety first!!

All of our snowmobiles are now ready and waiting.

I have a bit of a rant today…

Where the heck is our snow??

Did you know that there is snow chaos in Stockholm? They got like 50 cm (about 20 inches) in a day which is NOT normal. Us? We got about 15 cm… barely 6 inches!! Us, in Lapland. Us, who are PREPARED. Us, how are waiting! Us, who WANT it. Us, who NEED to drive snowmobile. Yes, MEEEEEEEE.

The south of Sweden do (mostly) not want nor are they prepared for that kind of snow. We are ready. The cold is here, it has been up to minus 18°C but we need the snow.

So where the heck is our snow??

Went for a walk today with the dogs and while it is gorgeous out we can not help but wonder….. (and then you have a certain…. man in power who claims global warming is a hoax. It is not. I am living it.)

Northern Lights & snow & the moon.

Quick post today. Was about to walk home with my dogs…

Then I changed my mind and ran back inside (the Lodge) and got my camera (and left some stunned & annoyed looking doggies 😀 ).

The northern Lights are out and the moon is stunning this evening. We haven’t had a clear night like this in ages! It’s been snowing lots and lots, which is good but it was so nice to see the stars again. I can get lost in these stars.

Anyways, when we say that the snow illuminates everything… it’s hard to describe what that looks like. On our darkest days we have about 2,5-3 hours of daylight. You might say that that sounds very dark but… the snow illuminates everything! Especially when the moon is out like tonight. Can you see the clear shadows of the trees on the frozen lake? That is moonlight. Moonlight illuminating the snow.

Get it now? 🍃🍃

Oh ya, you can see my cabin on the first picture… I forgot to turn the lights off.
